Real Steel: Why Flat Steel Sheets are Still King in the Manufacturing Industry

In the manufacturing industry, steel sheets are among the most used and preferred materials. Flat steel sheets can cover large areas and are highly malleable. They are easy to manipulate into a multitude of shapes and sizes, making them the perfect material for a diverse range of industries.

Flat sheet processing employs a number of industrial treatments to turn steel into sheets of varying thicknesses and widths. These sheets then undergo further processing depending on the needs of the client. Different treatments produce different types of steel sheets, for a variety of applications: for instance, hot rolled black, or HR, processed sheets have a rough finish and texture which makes them perfect for equipment and structures that don’t require painting, while cold-rolled sheets are easier to plate and paint, making them ideal for visible applications.

There are many reasons flat steel sheets are the material of choice for most manufacturers. Here are some of them.

Versatility

Manufacturing and stamping companies prefer steel sheets because of their versatile nature. Depending on the need, workers can use steel sheets as parts of a larger application, or as the main material for a particular structure. Because it is malleable, workers can bend, shape, cut, and stretch a steel sheet to meet highly specific requirements. This allows both the manufacturing company and their clients to create unique designs for custom projects.

The relatively low thickness-to-weight ratio of steel sheets is also one of the reasons that construction industry prefers them. The low ratio makes steel sheets easier to work with and to transport, and requires fewer people and equipment to move around and manipulate.

Durability

Despite its malleability and lightness, steel sheets are surprisingly durable. With just a few simple applications and treatment processes, steel sheets can become resistant to a variety of physical and chemical effects such as corrosion, moisture, UV rays, and even scratches. These treatments processes can range from hot or cold pressing the sheets, to coating the steel in special chemicals via galvanization.

Most steel processing facilities will offer different types of steel sheets depending on a project’s requirements. Depending on the project, manufacturers will select steel sheets based on specific physical and chemical properties, then process the sheets according to their client’s specifications.

Low Maintenance

Because of their versatility and durability, steel sheets are naturally low maintenance. With the right treatment, equipment or parts that use steel sheets will eventually require less upkeep. Aside from being resistant to most chemical changes like corrosion, a steel sheet’s malleability means that minimal effort is required for repairs. This makes steel sheets a practical choice for construction companies and clients looking for an easy to maintain, versatile, and durable material for their projects.

By working with our sales team, we can adjust several aspects of your order to make things easier for your team members. Next are some areas to keep in mind that can improve efficiency and quality.

1. MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONS

Often customers place an order with the following basic information: Quantity/Gauge/Width/Length/Steel Type…

However there are quite a few QUALIFIERS that will help us all get the best value from the informational exchange.

2. TOLERANCES

When discussing material with our Sales Team, be sure to include tolerances for your gauge, width, and length (if applicable). In some cases, Hascall can meet tolerances as low as +/-.001 on gauge, +/-.003 on width, and +/-.015 on length. Specifications – Many steel specifications come with sub categories that can alter chemistries and mechanical boundaries. Be sure to have the full specification when ordering or talk with your sales representative to discuss options.

3. PACKAGING

Proper packaging can help reduce unloading and production time. ID – We offer ID sizes in 16”, 20”, and 24” OD – We are able to provide OD sizes up to 72” Skidding – Standard or custom skidding available, just let us know how you would like your material skidded to best meet your equipment needs.
Paper – Protective paper is standard on all orders but can be applied with standard or full wrapping both with and without Hascall Logos. Max Coil and Skid Weight – Coils can be adjusted to meet your max lift and coil capacities.
Offloading – Material can be shipped skidded or standing and set for Forklift on the side or the rear of the bed. Material can also be shipped ready for sheet lifter or overhead crane offload.

4. DELIVERY

5. THE UNKNOWN

And lastly, we know each customer is unique. There may be special requests that we would love to accommodate. These may range from a sample of the steel attached to the packaging, to increased tag requirements and frequencies. We are happy to work with you in order to be your trusted choice in slit steel coil and blanks.
